About Carey Drake

Carey Drake

It's me, Carey.

First of all, hello and thanks for visiting my homepage.  I am a UGA Master of Internet Technology Student (M.I.T.) with a B.B.A. in Management Information Systems from the UGA Terry College of Business. I also hold a New Media Certificate from the UGA New Media Institute.  I have been creating websites professionally since 2005 when I founded my company, Thrasher, LLC at 16 and in high school.

The M.I.T. program is a great fit for me and I really appreciate how the course has a strong blend of technology and business aspects.  Most importantly I like how the M.I.T program (and also my MIS program) places a strong emphasis on process and business logic that support effective decision making and support systems.

In 2007 I was hired by the Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute (BHSI)  at the University of Georgia as a web developer.  In 2011 BHSi graciously offered me a funded assistantship to continue my education in graduate school and to continue working for the university.   Part of the additional work for my assistantship has been to develop an full functional native iPhone app for a graduate program on campus that will help recruit new students and assist existing ones.  I work part time on campus in the Paul D. Coverdell Center and have created and manage around 15 websites for the university.  I love my job and everyone I work with at BHSI and will continue working with them until I graduate.

My skills progress each year. I do my best to stay fresh with the latest technologies and trends by attending DWEEBS (the University’s faculty and staff web group) meetings where we have excellent guest speakers from Adobe and W3C to name a few. I recently earned a New Media Certificate from the UGA Grady school of journalism that certifies my expertise in the application and development of new media technologies. Through the certificate program I learned more about the development and applications of mobile and social media and developed a prototype iPhone application for my final project.

Apart from work and school, I have many hobbies that keep me busy.  I am a big fan of costuming and am a member of the 501st Star Wars costuming group and just completed a screen accurate ESB Boba Fett costume.  I really enjoy the work, creativity, and detail that go into creating the costumes and also the smiles on little kids faces (and adults!).  We troop events large and small and I have had a lot of unique and memorable and touching experiences that help raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation. Aside from costuming, I have been taking piano lessons for ten years and am currently working on Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.  I created a web dvd of my senior recital on my portfolio page.  I also enjoy working out at the gym.  I competed in my first power lifting competition last year.  I plan on entering the competition again this year and setting even more personal records.
